What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are made of thin porcelain shells that are bonded over your teeth to recreate the natural beauty of your smile. This permanent cosmetic treatment can eliminate a variety of cosmetic imperfections, providing you with a flawless look and feel.

Not only can porcelain veneers help boost your self-esteem, but they also improve your ability to eat and speak with ease. The veneer process is quick, easy, and takes just two appointments at our dental office in Basalt, CO.

Benefits of Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers can lift your self-esteem, perfect the appearance of your teeth, and fix a variety of dental problems. Have you ever wanted perfectly straight teeth without the hassles of braces? With porcelain veneers, you immediately enjoy the benefits of straight teeth without waiting years for results.

Veneers are a remarkable cosmetic treatment that can completely transform the appearance of your smile, giving you more confidence than ever before. Each porcelain veneer will be custom-made to the contour of your teeth and bonded with utmost precision.

At Elevate Dental Wellness, we generally use porcelain veneers to correct the following dental problems:

  • Discolored, stained, or yellow teeth
  • Misaligned, uneven teeth
  • Cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
  • Worn-down teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are too small or large

Candidacy For Porcelain Veneers

Patients with progressed tooth decay are not typically good candidates for porcelain veneers. However, a dental cleaning might be able to remove the decay to get your smile ready for veneer treatment.

Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are placed onto the front surface of your teeth. As such, if the tooth is too damaged, the porcelain veneers won’t have a sturdy surface to bond with. Receiving your porcelain veneers typically requires just two visits to our Basalt dental office. Dr. Van Gorden and Dr. Steinbach will give you the smile of your dreams in just a few steps.

Step 1: Your Initial Consultation

Your journey begins at your consultation with one of our experienced holistic dentists, Dr. Van Gorden or Dr. Steinbach, to discuss your smile goals. It’s the perfect time to ask any questions and for us to determine the best cosmetic solution for your unique needs.

During the consultation, your Basalt dentist will evaluate your oral health and provide you with a customized treatment plan based on your needs. If porcelain veneers aren’t right for you, they may also include alternative methods to achieve your goals.

If you decide to move forward we’ll proceed by cleaning your teeth and matching the right color for your porcelain veneers with your natural teeth so they can blend in seamlessly with your smile.

Step 2: The Veneers Procedure

Before the procedure, we’ll provide you with a local anesthetic to numb your mouth so we can gently shave off a small amount of enamel. For patients who suffer from dental anxiety, dental phobia, or simply need help relaxing during their appointment, we offer sedation dentistry to offer a more comfortable experience.

After preparing your teeth, we’ll be able to take accurate impressions of your teeth. Afterwards, we’ll provide you with a temporary veneer while we send off your model to a dental lab. These high-quality images are used to custom-craft your new porcelain veneers.

When your veneers are ready, you’ll return to our office in Basalt, CO. We’ll remove your temporary veneers, clean off your teeth, apply the adhesive, and precisely attach them to your natural teeth.

Dr. Van Gorden or Dr. Steinbach will remove any excess dental cement, ensuring the veneers fit precisely on your teeth, and examine your bite to see if any final adjustments are needed. After this step, your new smile will be complete!

Caring for Your New Veneers

After your porcelain veneer treatment is complete, we may have you return for a follow-up appointment within a few weeks. Our dental team will ensure your porcelain veneers still fit comfortably, remain in good shape, and aren’t affecting your gums.

Porcelain veneers can maintain their beauty for up to 20 years with proper oral hygiene and bi-annual visits to our Basalt office. They require the same type of care as your natural teeth:

  • Brush after each meal, at least twice a day
  • Floss once a day or before bedtime
  • Rinse with a fluoride-free mouthwash
  • Use non-abrasive toothpaste so you don’t scratch them
  • Reduce the amounts of staining foods and drinks

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the porcelain veneers procedure painful?
Does dental insurance cover porcelain veneers?
What if my porcelain veneer falls off or is damaged?
What foods can I eat and what should I avoid?

Is the porcelain veneers procedure painful?

No, the porcelain veneer process isn’t painful. Your cosmetic dentist will administer a local anesthetic to the areas where veneers will be placed. The procedure isn’t very invasive, so you should only experience mild discomfort following the appointment which can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or Advil and a cold compress.

Does dental insurance cover porcelain veneers?

Dental insurance usually doesn’t cover cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening or veneers. Porcelain veneers aren’t considered necessary because their purpose is mostly aesthetic.

What if my porcelain veneer falls off or is damaged?

If your porcelain veneer falls off, call our office immediately at (970) 279-5647 to let us know. Don’t try to reattach it yourself. We’ll get an appointment for you as soon as possible and make your smile beautiful again by fixing your porcelain veneer.

In the meantime, put it in a small container to keep it safe so you can bring it to your appointment for re-application. Dr. Van Gordon or Dr. Steinbach can either re-attach the porcelain veneer or suggest new ones if you’ve had your current veneers for a long time.

What foods can I eat and what should I avoid?

We recommend eating softer foods for the first few days while you adjust to your new bite. After several weeks, there shouldn’t be any restrictions on the foods you can eat unless otherwise specified by your Basalt dentist.

The foods most commonly avoided by patients with porcelain veneers include:

  • Ice
  • Hard candy
  • Caramel
  • Nuts
  • Popcorn

While you can still eat these foods, chewing them without caution increases the likelihood of damaging your porcelain veneers.
