Proactive Care With Preventive Measures

Your mouth has a unique microbiome filled with healthy bacteria that break down your food, deliver nutrients to the rest of your body, and fight to protect against foreign agents. When sugar and food debris is left sitting in your mouth for too long, it can lead to the development of unhealthy bacteria.

Without proper removal through brushing, flossing, and rinsing after meals, you’re at risk for tooth decay. This means the bacteria can grow and eat away at your teeth, causing cavities and a host of other dental problems.

Preventive care such as good oral hygiene habits paired with routine dental visits with our experts Dr. Steinbach and Dr. Van Gorden can keep your mouth decay-free all year long. As an added protection, they may recommend a dental sealant to protect your teeth from the effects of tooth decay and cavities.

What are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is a thin protective coating made of dental-grade plastic that is applied to the biting surface of a tooth. The teeth responsible for chewing have grooves and peaks which allow them to tear and shred food. However, if those teeth have grooves that are a little too deep, it can become the perfect hiding place for unhealthy bacteria. These teeth are typically difficult to clean, which means you’re at a higher risk of developing cavities.

A dental sealant works by filling in the deep grooves so that bacteria can’t gather and cause cavities.

Treatment Process

Dental sealants are a quick, painless, and non-invasive procedure that can be completed in one visit to our Basalt location. During your consultation, Dr. Steinbach or Dr. Van Gorden will take detailed X-rays of your teeth. If they notice any particularly deep grooves unaffected by tooth decay, they’ll likely recommend a dental sealant.

When receiving sealants, we’ll thoroughly clean and dry your teeth before placing a dental-grade bonding agent into the groove of the tooth followed by a coating of sealant. We’ll then use a specialized light to solidify your sealant. You’ll leave our Basalt office with a smile that’s both healthy and well-protected.

Dental sealants require no downtime after application and there are no side effects following the procedure. At Elevate Dental Wellness, we offer biocompatibility testing as part of our holistic services so you’ll never have to worry about the rare event of an allergic reaction to dental sealants.
