What Are Dental Crowns?

Dental crowns are known as a type of dental restoration that completely covers the entire tooth surface to restore its natural shape and size. Crowns are typically the best option for patients with damaged or decayed teeth as they protect and strengthen a tooth that can’t be restored with dental fillings or other restorative options. Untreated tooth decay can lead to lifelong dental problems such as permanent loss of teeth and periodontal disease. Dr. Steinbach recommends dental crowns to protect, restore, and strengthen your teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are made of a durable acrylic resin or porcelain material that prevents bacteria and food from reaching your enamel and causing further decay. They protect any exposed parts of the roots of your teeth to prevent pain and serve as an effective long-term treatment.

Some of the other benefits patients experience with a dental crown include:

  • Repairing and protecting a cracked, chipped, or broken tooth
  • Supporting a tooth damaged by decay
  • Improving the appearance of crooked teeth
  • Enhancing the brightness of your smile
  • Topping a dental implant

The Dental Crown Process

The first step to renewing your smile is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Steinbach. Dr. Steinbach will thoroughly clean your teeth of decay and debris as well as examine your teeth, making sure to treat any underlying oral health issues. Once your teeth have been thoroughly examined, our Basalt dentist will prepare your tooth to receive the crown and take an impression of your teeth, allowing us to make a customized crown just for you. A temporary crown will be provided until your next appointment.

Two weeks later, you’ll return to our Basalt office for your final fitting and Dr. Steinbach will make any necessary adjustments. The crown will be bonded to your tooth and your smile will officially be renewed.

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns can last between five and fifteen years with proper maintenance. There are a couple of factors to be considered in order to preserve the longevity of your crowns:

  • Keeping a consistent oral hygiene routine by brushing, flossing, and rinsing after meals. This will protect your natural tooth from further decay.
  • Restraining from clenching or grinding your teeth. Eating too many hard food items such as hard candy can also strain your dental crown.
  • Visiting your dentist at least twice a year for regular dental cleanings and exams.

What should I do if my crown gets damaged?

If your dental crown sustains damage, it’s important that you do not attempt to fix it yourself. Keep the crown in a safe place and schedule an appointment with Dr. Steinbach by calling 970-279-5647. She’ll get you in as soon as possible.

Does receiving dental crowns hurt?

Receiving dental crowns is a virtually painless process. Dentists will administer local anesthetic to numb your targeted tooth and surrounding area before beginning the procedure. It’s normal to feel some discomfort following your procedure. However, this should fade within a couple days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications and cold compresses.

How long do dental crowns take?

Two appointments are required for dental crowns, however, your first appointment may take 60 minutes to complete, while your fitting appointment may take as few as 30 minutes. At your initial consultation, our Basalt dentist will provide you with an estimated treatment timeline. The length of your procedure may also vary depending on your oral health condition.
