Invisalign vs Traditional Metal Braces

Clear aligners have been incredibly popular recently, and Invisalign has been at the forefront of the movement. Invisalign is a set of orthodontic appliances that are a clear plastic alternative to traditional mental dental braces used to straighten teeth. When you insert a new aligner, the teeth in the tray itself are somewhat straighter than your teeth are. This is because the aligners are designed such that teeth will shift in modest increments. Your teeth will be under slight pressure and, over the following two weeks, they will move to fit the aligner. You will receive a new set every two weeks until your smile goals are achieved.

They’re a comfortable, visually appealing, and easy alternative to traditional metal braces. Unlike metal braces, Invisalign aligners can be easily removed which can empower patients to live without altering their lifestyles.

Benefits of Invisalign Treatment

Our Basalt dental team can help straighten your teeth using Invisalign without anyone ever noticing. This can be a relief to patients who feel insecure about their orthodontic issues. The benefits of using Invisalign are numerous and include:

  • Discretion — Aligners are almost invisible, so people won’t even notice that you’re wearing them.
  • Enhanced Comfort — The aligners’ thin, flexible material is designed for maximum comfort.
  • Fully Detachable Device — Because Invisalign treatment doesn’t require metal braces or wires, you can continue to consume all of your favorite foods.
  • Optimized Oral Hygiene —Cleaning your teeth is a lot simpler with the aligners which means you can achieve a healthy smile with less hassle.
  • Shorter Treatment Plan —Treatment duration is shorter since Invisalign straightens teeth up to twice as quickly as conventional braces.

The 3-Step Invisalign Process

Your Consultation

The first step on your Invisalign journey is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Van Gorden by calling (970) 279-5647. At this appointment, Dr. Van Gorden will examine your teeth and mouth to assess your Invisalign candidacy.

We’ll take a 3D digital scan of your mouth that takes less than a minute, showing an accurate and complete image. We’ll use this information to create your treatment plan and send them to the lab to create your aligners.

Your First Aligners

Your first set of aligners can take a couple of weeks to be created, but when they’re ready we’ll call you back to our office. Dr. Van Gorden will go over the treatment with you and make sure your aligners fit perfectly.

When you start wearing your aligners, they may feel a little uncomfortable. This feeling should go away as you get used to wearing them, but remember — they’re moving your teeth, and that may hurt a little no matter what kind of orthodontic treatment you’re going through.

Wearing Your Aligners

Every two weeks, you’ll receive a new set of aligners to replace the ones you’ve been wearing as your treatment progresses. Make sure you’re wearing your aligners for the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day so your treatment stays on track.

You can remove your aligners to eat and clean your teeth, but try to schedule your day so you’re wearing your aligners most of the time.

Maintaining Your Invisalign Trays

To clean your aligners, brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle toothpaste twice a day. Make sure to also thoroughly brush and floss your teeth so they don’t transfer bacteria to the trays. After you eat, it’s important for you to brush your teeth before putting your aligners back in.

You may have food debris or sticky liquid on your teeth that can transfer to the aligners, causing them to stain or become damaged. If your aligners become stained, you may be able to remove them by using special Invisalign cleaning products.

Are at-home aligners safe?

At-home aligner brands have recently begun to pop up as less expensive alternatives to dentist-provided brands, like Invisalign. They claim to be able to achieve the same results without the need for regular in-office check-ups.

The truth is, these brands may be less expensive upfront, but they can cause devastating results in the long run. While a dentist may virtually check your progress, there are many issues they aren’t able to detect through a screen.

This can result in safety measures being overlooked for the sake of convenience. Some at-home aligner patients have spent more time after their treatment to correct severe issues.

Does Invisalign hurt?

Invisalign will likely be a little uncomfortable to start, especially when you switch aligners to progress your treatment. It’s important to keep in mind that your teeth are being moved into a different position, and this is rarely comfortable.

But because the clear aligners don’t have wires or pointy areas, they won’t scratch or scrape inner-areas of your mouth as metal braces do.

Is Invisalign covered by insurance?

Coverage for Invisalign varies depending on your insurance plan and provider. For more details about your Invisalign coverage, we recommend contacting your provider directly.

If you’re concerned about fitting Invisalign treatment into your budget, our office can help you. We accept a variety of payment options and work with CareCredit and Lending Club, two financing companies that can break the cost of treatment into affordable monthly payments.

Can I remove my braces and get Invisalign?

Some people can remove their metal braces and switch to Invisalign treatment. You may be a candidate depending on your treatment plan and the amount your teeth need to move.

The only way to know for sure is to schedule a consultation and go through an examination with a dentist. At your consultation, your Invisalign dentist will let you know if you can switch after evaluating your current progress and treatment plan.
