Urgent Dental Care Checklist

Urgent Dental Care Checklist

Please consider the following if deciding to call outside of normal hours:

  • If you’re having difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 911 immediately or go to your nearest emergency department.
  • If you’ve lost a tooth or damaged your teeth, gums, or jaw as a result of trauma, please call us right away.
  • If you’re experiencing uncontrolled bleeding or pain associated with a recent procedure performed in our office, give us a call.

Additionally, please keep in mind:

  • Drs. Van Gorden and Steinbach cannot phone-in pain medication to the pharmacy at any time. If you’re in need of prescription-strength pain medication, you must be seen in the office.
  • Drs. Van Gorden and Steinbach will not prescribe any medication for you if you’re not a patient of record with an updated health history on file.
  • While unexpected dental problems are unsettling, please know that there are very few true dental emergencies.
  • We are best able to address and manage these problems when we have our team working alongside, and therefore encourage you to leave us a message. We’ll return your call at the beginning of the next business day.

Financing Your Dental Emergencies

Here at Elevate Dental Wellness, we want to assure you that your health and safety are always our top priority. If you encounter a dental emergency, we don’t want you to worry about the costs.

We work with CareCredit and LendingClub to help you receive the care you need. These programs allow you to get your treatment at the time of your incident and pay later at a monthly rate.

Types of Emergency Treatments

Our doctors can help treat a variety of unexpected dental problems. Explore the different emergency dental services we provide in case of a dental accident or trauma.

Tooth Extractions
Fillings, Crowns, & Bridges Repair
Orthodontic Care
Dental Implants & Denture Care

Tooth Extractions

If you need a tooth immediately extracted due to infection or trauma, we can remove it to save your oral health and improve your smile. Give our Basalt office a call right away if you’re experiencing any pain or sensitivity from your tooth so our doctors can examine and extract it, if necessary.

Fillings, Crowns, & Bridges Repair

If you have a cracked, loose, or lost crown, bride, or mercury-free filling, we recommend saving any pieces you may have of it and bring it in so we can save your tooth. Please don’t wait too long to give us a call, as it can increase your risk of infection.

Orthodontic Care

Sometimes, your orthodontic clear aligners may crack or become lost, and waiting for a new set can affect your treatment. If this happens to you or your child, let our team know so we can get a new pair of aligners for you.

Dental Implants & Denture Care

If your dental implant becomes loose or gets knocked out, it’s best to get in for an emergency appointment so we can address the situation. Also, if your dentures or implant-supported dentures break, bring them in with you at the next available appointment so we can repair it.

Can I go to the ER for a dental emergency?

If you need emergency dental care, but our office is unavailable, you can go to the Emergency Room (ER) if necessary. The ER will treat you in certain instances, and they will bill your health insurance.

However, the ER typically won’t be able to treat most dental problems unless it’s a health emergency. They can provide you with temporary measures to reduce your discomfort until we’re able to see you.

What qualifies as emergency dental care?

Almost any dental problem that needs immediate treatment to stop bleeding, relieve pain, or save a tooth from further damage is considered a dental emergency. Whether a tooth is knocked out, a restoration is cracked, or you have a bad infection, Elevate Dental Wellness can help provide urgent dental care.

The emergency treatments we offer include tooth extractions, repairs for fillings, crowns, or bridges, orthodontic care, and dental implant or denture adjustments.

What should I do when a tooth gets knocked out?

If your tooth gets knocked out, give our Basalt dental office a call right away. We will do our best to get you in within the hour so we can salvage your tooth.

Be sure to be delicate with your tooth and hold it by the top, not the root, so you don’t damage any cells. Additionally, rinse the tooth in water, but don’t scrub it, and bring it in with you to the appointment.

How do you handle a chipped or fractured tooth?

If you fracture one of your teeth, immediately rinse your mouth with warm water and use an ice pack on the outside of your mouth to reduce swelling. To help with pain, take an over-the-counter medication like ibuprofen.

Be sure to give us a call to get in for an emergency appointment so we can fix your broken, chipped, or cracked tooth. You may see online that you can buy oral glue to reattach your tooth, but please don’t do this. Only our doctors can successfully repair your fractured tooth.
